Marist High School Vocal Jazz Group-Special Concert Series

Saturday, December 15, 2012 - 6:00pm

Marist Singers was originally formed as a chamber ensemble that met before school twice a week. It was reconfigured as a vocal jazz ensemble in the fall of 1992 and has continued to rehearse before school for 60 minutes a week. The 12-14 students are auditioned from a pool of 30-35 auditionees each May. Members of the ensemble have participated in All State Chorus, Spivey Hall Honor Chorus, and various honor choirs around the Southeast. At the Heritage Festivals in Orlando they received superior ratings and first place awards at both competitions.

The 2012-13 edition of Marist Singers is comprised of 12 musicians with three sopranos, three altos, three tenors, and three basses. Directed by Mr. Tim Johnson and Mrs. Sharon Coheley the group is accompanied by Mr. Johnson on keyboard with rhythm section assistance from faculty and students.

In addition to performing at the four senior high concerts each year, they have performed the National Anthem at Marist football and baseball games for about 15 years. They have also performed for the DeKalb library Month of Jazz reception, the Wassail Ball at the Cherokee Town Club, performed pre-music for A Christmas Carol at the Alliance Theatre, the Georgia Green Initiative banquet, the Atlanta Braves, and Atlanta Hawks.

This Holiday season will find the group performing at the Woodruff Arts Center, Town Brookhaven, Atlantic Center Plaza, Steve’s Live Music in Sandy Springs, and in concert on December 17th and 19th on the Marist campus.
